Farmland Investment Companies - Why
Farmland Is Becoming A Hot Commodity
These days it seems like there is a rush for hard assets all across the world. People are sensing the volatility and instability of stocks and bonds and are wanting to place their money into more tangible goods or hard assets with intrinsic value. But the value of farmland is also up worldwide, and we might ask why. What’s changed in the past decade or so that has many people perceiving farmland as an important part of their investment portfolio?
#1 - Healthier/Wealthier Diets Overseas - More and more citizens of emerging nations are beginning to demand a middle-class diet. This means more meat and dairy products for these developing countries, which means a much higher demand on North American grain products, which are being imported to stock up the local livestock.
#2 - Larger Population - It’s no secret that the world has grown in the past decade and the global demand for food has reflected it. Over the past ten years, we have produced less food than we’ve consumed. And population growth is not slowing down. Another decade promises to bring at least another billion people, if not more, which means the demand for farmland and its produce will only increase.
#3 - Long-term Consistency - Farmland has been a consistent investment for a long time, and people are beginning to notice. In some places in Canada, the return on investment is as high as 9% annually, and only rarely are there years where the yield is less than this. This makes farmland a stable and appealing commodity in a world where stability of any kind is becoming increasingly difficult to locate.
#4 - Relaxed Policies On Ownership - For the past few decades, Canada has had strict rules about who can and cannot own a large volume of farmland (particularly in Saskatchewan) but these policies have been heavily relaxed recently and now virtually any Canadian citizen or resident can own land and become an investor.
#5 - Timely Inflation Hedge - Let’s face it, things do not look great for the currency right about now. With the global economy linked to the US economy, and the Americans doing everything they can to spend their way into massive debt and hyperinflation, it’s no wonder that hard assets and inflation hedges are beginning to have their appeal.
